Uganda president: Burundi factions to resume negotiations ahead of presidential polls

Uganda's president says Burundi's government and opposition groups have agreed to resume negotiations aimed at ending political unrest over President Pierre Nkurunziza's bid for a third term.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who is mediating Burundi's crisis under the banner of a regional bloc, said in a statement Wednesday that Burundi's political actors had agreed to negotiate "unconditionally and expeditiously in order to reach an agreement on issues affecting the political situation in Burundi and report back as soon as possible."

Museveni arrived in Burundi on Tuesday and held talks with representatives of Burundi's government and opposition groups that want Nkurunziza to step down after serving for two terms.

United Nations-backed negotiations between the parties collapsed after the opposition insisted on Nkurunziza's exit.

Burundi's presidential elections are set for July 21.
